A Trip to the Past With Palenque

The south of Mexico is the cradle of Maya civilization – one of the greatest cultures in human history. Born 3 thousand years ago, it is surrounded with historical mysteries and legends. But the most wonderful thing is that this world is still alive. Meeting with Maya means a travel to the past. The first place to get to know Maya is Uxmal. Then we advise you a travel to Palenque – a wonderful site. One of the main local attractions is the Temple of Inscriptions where in 1952 there was a true treasure found – Maya temple. The temple is one of the oldest Maya erections, preserved in its primeval state. There is also a Palace situated opposite the temple. The palace is adorned with ancient bas reliefs and stone carvings.

Palenque reached its grandeur in about 600-700 AC (approximately the same time as Tikal). However, its architecture style is very different, a more graceful one. For instance, the Palace is one of the best examples of the Classic residential architecture. Maya also created things of plaster (bas reliefs on the Temple of Inscriptions).

Temple of Inscriptions was built in 692 AC and is standing on a 21-meter platform. The temple is one of the principal structures of Palenque. Inside you will find huge stone slabs with various well-preserved inscriptions carved on them which helped learn the history of this great city.
Hieroglyphs found in the temple were created approximately in 700 AC. But the main object found there is a tomb. According to research, the sarcophagus was placed inside the temple before the pyramid was built.

The Palace was erected on a huge platform (10 meters high and 8 meters wide) and surrounded with stairs. This complex consists of 25 buildings and 4 yards, connected by narrow paths and staircases. In the south-east there is a four-story tower: the only Maya tower ever found. Its floors are connected by a small staircase. Scientists think the tower served as an observatory.

Temple of the Sun was probably built in 642 AC. Its plaster decorations and elaborately carved reliefs are the best-preserved in Palenque. There is also a wonderful stone bas relief found on its inner wall. It depicts sun worshiping.

Temple of the Cross is situated in the northern part of the complex, behind the Temple of the Sun. Some of the bas reliefs found on the temple’s western wall are now kept in Regional Museum of Anthropology, Mexico city. The other two originals are situated on each side of the door. But the most beautiful of them is found inside the temple. These reliefs portray cross-like images which probably depict creation of the centre of the world.

There is also a court for playing the Mesoamerican Ballgame found in the northern part of the palace. Even though it has not been fully renovated yet, it is almost the same size as the court in Tikal.

Finally, the Temple of the Skull located to the right from the entrance to the Palenque archaeological zone. The temple got its name thanks to a beautiful skeletal rabbit mask found inside.

Most Popular FAQ about Mayan Palenque

What was the lifestyle for people in a mayan city like Palenque?

Nobody knows for sure because very few people can read Mayan records, we only know what the Spaniards have recorded, and that barely scratches the surface
Has the ancient Mayan city of Palenque been affected by the flooding in Southern Mexico?

No, there is no problem in Palengue. Lots of good places to stay just outside the park entrance. Great city and the drive or bus ride from there to San Cristobal is one of my favorites in Mexico.
which airport is closer to Palenque and what city can i stay in?
I am planning a trip to Chiapas, mainly just to visit the Mayan ruins of Palenque, I need to know what airport is closer to Palenque so that I do not have to travel by Taxi so much. I also need to know what city would be the closest to the ruins in Palenque and what hotel would be a good place for me to stay.
The closest airport is at Villa Hermosa, Tabasco. But it is unlikely it will have international flights from your destination. You probably will have to flight to Mexico City and get a connecting flight. You can even check internal flight from Mexico to Villa Hermosa directly with Aviacsa. There is a little town outside Palenque which has quite a few hotels. Also their are some camping grounds and small hotels between the town and Palenque. Check Trip Advisor site for current recommendations. I hope you can manage to go. It is an amazing place.
Mayan city of Palenque?
Im doing a research paper and i need to have 5 major topics on palenque to write about. the 5 most important
1) How about the fact that nobody knows why it was abandoned. 2) lifestyle of the Mayans compared to other mesoAmerican cultures (eg Aztec, Olmec etc) 3) Architecture of Palenque 4) Beliefs etc 5) That gruesome ball sport they played makes interesting reading too Just some suggestions
What is the significance of the Palenque ruins site to the ancient Mayans?

Since there aren't any ancient Mayans around, it may remain a mystery.
Why is it that when I get drunk, I get into a fist fight with the spirit of the Mayan Emperor Pacal?
603-683 C.E. The Emperor Pacal died at the age of 80 and is buried in the Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque.
Why? Cause he fed you a dodgy burrito in a past life.
Which of the following is NOT a Mayan religious site?
A.Ziggurats at Ur B.Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque CNohoch Mul Temple at Cobá D.Temple of the Great Jaguar at Tikal
lol Ziggurats where giant temples in the middle east. couldn't you google this?
can someone tell me why people believe the mayan calender?
everyone is scared of the date 21st of december but the Mayans certainly did not take it as representing the end of the current world, since an inscription by Pacal at Palenque looks forward to a royal anniversary on October 15, 4772
There is a long and impressive list of doomsday predictions in history. I suppose some people somehow think they are on to something and manage to create a following. The 2012 predictions are a classic example. The surprising thing is that when these predictions fail, the believers are undeterred.
Can anyone who visited Palenque post an actual photograph of the original carving?
I recently verified that this souvenir was a replica of an actual Mayan inscription/carving. Apparently it was sketched by a well-known mayanist from the ruins in Palenque. I thought it would be cool to see an actual photograph of the original if anyone who visited happened to take any pictures of it. It's not clear how large it was - the souvenir is pretty small, but the actual carving may have been large - and exactly where in the ruins it was found isn't clear.. A picture of the souvenir is here: http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae294/sfigurac/Photo_080909_001.jpg A copy of an internet reference to the original is here: http://research.famsi.org/montgomery_list.php?_allSearch=throne&hold_search= Any help would be appreciated. Through more internet research I found out that this inscription came from one of the supports of the throne of the "Great Pakal" a mayan ruler. It was sketched originally by one of the archaeologists as you can see in this link: http://decipherment.wordpress.com/2008/10/21/notes-on-palenques-del-rio-throne/ I've only seen photographs of the top slab, and I understand it was broken up.
I've been to Palenque four times and I never noticed it--of course, I wasn't looking for it either. I think there's a good chance that it was removed to the ANTHROPOLOGICAL MUSEUM in Mexico City because it has such a great volume of stuff. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH7rb1yGAdM
why are people so interested in ancient ruins and pyramids?
especially ruins and pyramids in Chiapas, Mexico. i think they are located in Palenque and San Cristol bal? maybe? so what is it about these ancient mayan sites that fascinate people?
Treasure at first. Now seekers of knowledge about the people and their civilization that created them.
