Oaxaca City, Mexico - Now is the Time to Visit

Oaxaca City is a truly living cultural center. It is the meeting point for a number of indigenous cultures from south central Mexico. This is no shadow of the past. There is a pride and vitality evident in every conversation and experience. If you want to experience "real Mexico" then this is the place.

The key to a fantastic experience is in committing yourself to speaking two sentences with the people you meet as you wander the streets of the city. The first sentence is for the usual pleasantry. The second sentence is to ask the person either where they are from or how to pronounce a certain word. And that will initiate a great adventure!

Oaxaca has, 7 different living languages and 14 dialects (at least that is how many I remember). But don't be intimidated! In fact this is one of the great ways to find out about the true culture of the area. People in Oaxaca are proud of who they are and are eager to help you learn the "proper" way to say a certain word or phrase. And then they will be more than willing to tell you about their home villages and cultures. Of course, once you walk a block and stop to talk to someone else, you will get a different lesson on how to pronounce the phrase you just learned, and will learn about another village and culture!

Here is a very important tip for surviving... always carry a small pad of paper and a pen. Many words sounds the same and it is easier to write down the numbers or make maps to reinforce your understanding.

My most difficult time was catching the difference between 17, 50, and 100! In one shop, I spent a hilarious time handing money back and forth to the cashier. First I gave her too big of a bill, and she asked if I had anything smaller ( or I finally realized that is what she asked). I handed her something smaller and she gave me change, and then asked if I had a few pesos in coin, so that she could give me paper money. I know that this sounds simple, but all my poor Anglo brain was hearing was ciento ciento ciento! Yup, I had left the pad and pen in the hotel room. Finally I just took out all my money and held it out for her to pick through. I went back the the room and got "that look" from my spouse as she checked how much I had spent.

The honesty of the people we met was another outstanding part of our visit to Oaxaca city. I quite often had the experience of being handed back money. Well OK, I guess I had a big neon "halfwit tourist" sign flashing over my head. But in other places I would have been picked clean. In Oaxaca, they enjoyed our effort to learn and interact in their language. And we were often treated to amazing hospitality.

I have to tell you of one such experience.

It was 3pm on another hot and sunny day. We had been walking steady for four hours. Hot and dehydrated, we could not even think of food. All we wanted was liquids. We entered the Casa Mayordomo restaurant along the Alcala street and proceeded to ask the manager if we could just have a drink. After the usual pantomime, he escorted us past a room full of families, and into the La Pasion Bar at the back. We were the only ones in the bar, and the staff and manager kept giving us worried looks. Finally the manager couldn't stand it anymore and started giving out orders. Two big bowls of a shrimp and chili soup were brought to the table. A gift from our host. It turns out that most families have their main meal around 3pm in Oaxaca. And the manager just couldn't bear to see us sit there and not eat. The soup was delicious and helped to nourish and rehydrate us.

I'm afraid that this kind of hospitality and generosity will be under threat in the not too distant future. Yes the spirit and culture of the people will still be there, but the growing popularity of Oaxaca City will make personal attention a very hard thing to sustain. It is ironic that the present hospitality is possible because of a very divisive strike that occurred in 2006. The strike shut down the city, and tourists were warned not to travel to Oaxaca. People were laid off, businesses closed and developments were halted.

Oaxaca City is once again open to the world and is eager to share their rich culture. It won't be long before some big tour companies start booking hundreds of visitors and the historic center gets plugged with herds of "package people". I hope this won't happen, but I also wish the best for those who do business in Oaxaca. It is a hard balance. The one thing which may save Oaxaca from tourism hell is the infrastructure. But I'll deal with that in another article.

For now, let me just leave you with a sincere encouragement to grab a pen and pad of paper and book your flight to Oaxaca as soon as possible!

How long of a drive is it from Sacramento, CA to Oaxaca, Mexico?
Driving from Oaxaca, Mexico to Sacramento. How many miles is it roughly or days? Does anybody know website that shows Mexico's highway system? Im going with a friend so I figure its a lot cheaper to drive than fly. Flying is at least 600 dollars or more each. At even 4 dollars a gallon, we can get across with 400 or 500 bucks in his vw bug.
It is over 2577 miles and would take 5 days. You CANNOT drive at nite in Mexico , so you would have hotel bills. And you have to eat during those 5 days. You will have to pay for Mexican car insurance and a Mexican car permit at the border. This is a VERY challenging drive, esp. if you have not driven in Mexico before. You may find it actually is NOT cheaper. You could probably get a good price on flights into Mexico City, then take the bus to Oaxaca. Take an airport taxi to the bus station and there are buses leavng for Oaxaca every hour all day long. The fare is $36.00 USD. Think long and hard about this. The site below is ALWAYS short on the driving time...add at least 6 hours. You would also need a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas. See other sites for additional info. Edit: as to driving the Major highways at nite...sue you can...but there are still pedestrians, and animals on those at nite sometimes. The toll rads are not likely to have badpaving or holes inthem, but not all roads are toll roads...and these roads do have big holes in the most unexpected places.other answerer gave good info about the tolls...that sure adds to you expenses too.

Where can I purchase the cheapest airline tickets to Oaxaca, Mexico from San Diego?
I have a family of six in North San Diego with a low budget and we could barely afford to visit Mexico. I will not stay at a hotel and I don't buy through the internet. Also, I was listening to a Mexican radio station the other day and they were talking about buying two tickets and the third one free. But I don't know which airline it was. I think it's called Mexicana. SORRY I MENT I AM COMING FROM TIJUANA.
well it would have to be Mexicana because that is the only airline that serves Xoxocotlán International Airport (Oaxaca) with direct service into the United States into California but it is almost 1000 bucks just for one person and im checking a couple months from now and your talking about bringing 5 other people with you?!?!. i dont know what considers low budget for you but anytime you are flying internationally or out of the US be ready and dont be surprised if you're gonna have to fork over a good amount. if you find that deal then great! but i dont care who you are, if you want to SAVE on airfare then the internet is your best friend and if you dont like to book online then be ready to pay even more money
Where can I buy the cheapest airline tickets from Tijuana to Oaxaca, Mexico?

Also, I was listening to a Mexican radio station the other day and they were talking about buying two tickets and the third one free. But I don't know which airline it was. I am currently searching Mexicana.com, and found a flight for 6 people, on August 12 to 19, for $1791.60 with taxes included. That is from Tijuana. Make sure you all have passports. On Orbitz.com, from San Diego, and the same travel dates, I found a flight on AeroMexico for $3310.92 with taxes. That is way too expensive. From Tijuana to Oaxaca on Orbitz.com, I found a flight for $1796.34 with taxes on Mexicana.
Where is there cheap bus tickets leaving FROM OAXACA OR MEXICO CITY TO the USA for 100 dollars or less?
Where are there some cheap bus tickets leaving FROM Oaxaca OR Mexico City going TO the usa that is a one way trip for under 100 dollars? Is there many trains that go to the usa for cheap? What bus companies are cheap to get to the usa for 100 dollars or less? In Mexico city is there many busses that go to the border of the usa for cheap prices?
From Mexico city to Reynosa or Nuevo Laredo check Adame buses or other bus companies in the Bus station. From Mexico City to Reynosa or Nuevo Laredo should be around 100 dollars. Mexico City to Cuidad Juarez is farther ride and I paid about 100 dollars 4 years ago. Buses from Kentucky to Mexico City run about $250 now. Good luck you should be able to find something.
Should I study abroad in Xalapa or Oaxaca, Mexico?
I am going to be studying abroad in Mexico next fall for about four months. I have narrowed down my choice of city to Xalapa or Oaxaca. Does anyone recommend one over the other? Both places seem very interesting! I cannot decide. Personal experiences with either or both cities would be great!
I haven't been to Oaxaca in years, but I live near Xalapa and would not hesitate to recommend it. In the last year there has been some political unrest in Oaxaca, which might be a reason for caution. Students I have met here are very friendly and Xalapa is a busy city with lots to offer.
My family is going to go to Oaxaca, Mexico in April what are the steps we need to take?
We are going to visit my fiancee and my dad little brother and my 1yr old daughter are all going. (4 of us) What papers do we need because we are planning to go by plane there. What steps need to be taken. Thanks for all answers and help.
First everyone will need a current passport. You will need a notarized letter from your daughter's father (if your fiancee is not the father) giving permission for her to travel to Mexico. If your little brother is under 18 he will need a similar letter from his mother. If you are going to Oaxaca the city nothing else is needed. If you are going to an outlying village in the jungle you might want to check are see if any vaccinations are recommended. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_970.html Oaxaca is a beautiful magical place. Have a great time.
