Do and See in Chichen-Itza
Traveling in Mexico: Alternatives for Getting to Cancun and Chichen-Itza GETTING TO AND AWAY FROM CANCUN:
Getting to and away from Tulum and Playa Del Carmen
Buses headed south from Cancun aren’t that hard to come by. A number leave from the main first-class terminal on the Avenida Uxmal just off the Avenida Tulum. Others across the street on the Avenida Uxmal from one of the smaller bus companies specializing in trips to the surrounding small towns. Expect to pay around $40 pesos one way to Tulum and make sure to leave early and return by early evening if you’re just making a day trip.
To Playa Del Carmen
Playa Del Carmen costs around $15 or $20 pesos one way and takes barely an hour to reach. Frequently you can cop a deal for a slightly better price if you’ll shop around a little (your Spanish permitting!) The Playa Del Carmen terminal is an over-crowded, open-walled eye-sore of a building a block or so from the beach and is absolutely packed during the summer months making it a hot, steamy, sticky experience you won’t enjoy.
Be VERY careful with your belongings. The arrival terminal and the departure terminal are in different locations a few short blocks apart. Don’t forget to ask around for it before you’re ready for the return trip. Go early for more comfort and to beat the heat plus crowds combination. Buses either way depart as frequently as every 15 minutes or half hour. Plan to stay overnight in Playa del Carmen or return by early afternoon on day trips, otherwise… Madre Mia!
Getting to and away from Merida and Chichen-Itza:
Headed for Merida or want to be dazzled by the awe-inspiring ruins at Chichen Itza? No problem. Same terminals but the buses are headed in a different direction. Both Chichen-Itza and Merida are West of Cancun. For a fare in the neighborhood of $70 pesos you can make the four to six hour jaunt to sizzling Merida. From here, the Mayan astronomical complex at Dtzibilchaltun (a definite must-see), the beach-fronted Progresso and other north coastal towns are only a short hop away. Roughly half-way to Merida, along the same route, lie the magnificent ruins of Chichen-Itza, one of the most visited archeological sites in the western world. They’re so commonly known that they’re recognizable by most people in the northern hemisphere. Fares run around $50 pesos to reach the site. Cheaper routes take up to three and a half hours to reach the ruins while the more expensive express buses (up to $70 pesos one way) make the trip in as little as two hours.

Most Popular FAQ about Chichen Itza Is chichen Itza safe for americans to visit? Me and my wife are planning on visiting Chichen Itza in mexico for a few days in the near future. Before we got though I just want to make sure how safe it is. Has anyone been there before and is Mexico too dangerous to travel to currently and i should choose somewhere else? thank you, plus any tips?
To the best of my knowledge I can`t remember the last time a tourist was killed in Mexico that wasn't`t drug related.
250,000 Americans were killed in America in the last decade.
I knew a guy from Chicago that said he feels safer walking around Acapulco after midnight than at mid day in Chicago.
20 Million tourists visited Mexico last year without incident. 2.5 million of those were in the Yucatan.
P.S What owning 5 properties has to do with your question is quite puzzling.
Mel lives there too and knows wtf he is talking about.!How safe is it to travel to chichen itza? Me and my wife are planning on traveling to visit the site of Chichen Itza together on our honeymoon later this spring. But we are weary due to the high amounts of murders we are hearing on the television and that they are target tourists, even in the yucatan. has anyone gone recently? how safe do you think it is, thanks. And when is the best time to visit so i have a low chance of rain.
You know, this happens on the news every year with Mexico.
We have went every year for the past 5 years to Cancun/Riviera Maya, and we have been fine.
Go on and have a great time and don't worry. IF you are going to go to Chichen Itza, make sure you go with the people from your resort and take a bus. Don't go alone, just the two of you. It's always better when there's a big group of people. How safe is it to travel to chichen itza currently? Me and my wife are planning on traveling to visit the site of Chichen Itza together on our honeymoon later this spring. But we are weary due to the high amounts of murders we are hearing on the television and that they are target tourists, even in the yucatan. has anyone gone recently? how safe do you think it is, thanks.
It is a very safe and beautiful place. They actually shut it down if they feel it is not safe enough. Another great place that i would recommend to you and your wife would be a place called Selvatica. It is a wonderful time. It is a place where you zip line through the jungle with guides and then you go swimming in a cenote. There are different ways to get to the cenote like Segways, Dunebuggies, Bikes, Van or Horses on the Beach. It is an incredible time. You should definitely look into it.how safe is it to travel to chichen itza? Me and my wife are planning on traveling to visit the site of Chichen Itza together on our honeymoon later this spring. But we are weary due to the high amounts of murders we are hearing on the television and that they are target tourists, even in the yucatan. has anyone gone recently? how safe do you think it is, thanks.
Chichen Itza is located in the Yucatan State. The Yucatan State is the safest state in Mexico and has the lowest rate of violent crime.
For 2009 the Yucatan State reported zero drug related murders, that's the second time in the last four years the Yucatan has had zero drug related murders.
There can be a problem with petty theft as there are many poor people. No one will ever confront you and demand your wallet but if you leave your camera on the table and go to the bathroom it's very likely that it won't be there when you return. What things are there to do on the ride to Chichen Itza from playa del carmen? I read a review somewhere that said that a couple rented a car and took a small road trip from playa del carmen to Chichen Itza and it was the most amazing thing they did because of the stops they made on the way there. My question is what is there to stop and see on the way there that i might want to partake in.
You will pass many interesting things. I suspect the route you would take would be south to Tulum before going northwest to Valladolid, then west on the 180 to Piste and Chichen itza.
With this route you would pass the ruins at Tulumn, & Coba as well about 20 minutes north of Valladolid are the ruins of Ek Balam. Valladolid has a nice central area with colonial buildings.
You will also pass many Cenotes (Zaci & Ik Kil likely the most famous).
The restored church/convent in Uayma (near Valladolid) is very unique.
It's hard to do much in a day since Chichen Itza is impressive and it's a full day to see that but if you overnight then that will give you more time plus you can see the sound and light show at Chichen Itza. You could over night in Valladolid or Chichen Itza or an hour past the ruins is Itzamal, also very impressive but maybe too far if you are trying not to spend too much time away from your resort in PDC.
As for the toll road cost, it's expensive but if you go south to Tulum and hook up with the toll road at Valladolid you will miss one of the toll stations so that will save you some $$. If you take the toll road the entire way from Cancun to Chichen Itza count on about $30 each way. If you go Tulum->Coba->Valladolid->Chichen Itza route then it's about $12 each way. The toll roads take pesos only, no US dollars, no credit cards.Where do I find the best deal on Chichen Itza Day Tours? Three of us are leaving in 2 weeks and we need to book a Chichen Itza tour, we are staying at Oasis Cancun. What is the best website to book it? And the cheapest?
Greetings from Cancun!
When my friends and family come to visit they use
http://www.entertainment-plus.net
I don't know if they are the cheapest but I know they are very nice people to work with.
Have a great vacation!how long does it take to drive to Chichen Itza from Tulum? I'm going to Tulum for my thirtieth birthday this august and I was thinking about driving up to Chichen Itza for a day trip.
How far is it?
Is it worth the drive?
Thanks everyone!. I think I'll try to make a day trip out of it. I'm going to rent a car So I think we won't have a problem getting there early. Gracias a todos!
I'd agree with the estimates that put the driving time around 2 hours. If you take the road that runs from Tulum to Valladolid (past the Coba ruins) and then get on the 180 toll road to Chichen Itza you'll cut off one of the toll booths so that will save you some dollars. (as opposed to going north back towards the Cancun airport and hooking up with the 180 that way).
It's worth the drive and if you only want to spend one day going to ruins then that would be the one to go see. If you are looking to spend a little more time off the resort and since you are renting a car, you may want to consider checking out Coba, Ek Balam or a cenote like Dzitnup near Valladolid or Ik kil near Chichen Itza to name a few. Lots to see in the area.
Guides at more popular ruins can be expensive (but generally well worth it) so you should try to get some more people to fill you car and split on gas tolls and guides.
Enjoy. Below is a very good site on the Yucatan State. What is the best tour operator for Chichen Itza? I am staying in Playa Del Carmen in December and would like to take a day trip to Chichen Itza and maybe go to a cenote. I really do not want ot rent a car so what is the best tour company for Chichen Itza?
Hey There, I'm a travel agent. I recommend you use AMStar. It's Apple Vacations land operator in Mexico & the caribbean. They have their own bus tours. How would you paper mashay the chichen itza or what materials do you need???? Here my favorite paper mache recipe:
Here one I got off the net:
Paste
1 cup cold water
1 cup flour
2 1/2 cups boiling water
1 T. powdered alum
3/4 tsp. oil of wintergreen
Mix the cold water and flour together, stirring until smooth.
Add the boiling water and mix well. Pour the mixture into the top of a double boiler.
Cook over low heat until smooth. Add the alum and stir.
Remove from heat. When the mixture is cool, add the oil of wintergreen.
Here are some other Iv'e pick up from the Internet:
===========================================================
Paper Mache Recipes:
Use one of these 3 Paper Mache Recipes:
Recipe 1/ Ingredients: Flour,water,paper
Stir three parts water into one part flour until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
To make the paste last longer, add a few drops of oil of Wintergreen. (optional) You can buy this oil at a drugstore.
Stir well and the paste is ready to use.
Now you need paper- newspaper works well!
Dip each piece of paper in the liquid mixture and apply it one piece at a time to form your shapes.
Recipe 2/ Ingredients: Wallpaper paste,water,paper
Buy some wallpaper paste at a hardware store.
Mix one part wallpaper paste with three parts water.
Stir well and the paste is ready to use.
Now you need paper- newspaper works well!
Dip each piece of paper in the liquid mixture and apply it one piece at a time to form your shapes.
Recipe 3/ Ingredients: Glue,water,paper
Mix two parts white glue with one part warm water.
Stir well and the Paste is ready to use.
Now you need paper-newspaper works well!
Dip each piece of paper in the liquid mixture and apply it one piece at a time to form your shapes.
===========================================================================================
To make the paste:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups cold water
2 cups boiling water
3 tbsp. sugar
Mix together flour and cold water in a bowl. Add this mixture to the boiling water and allow it to return to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar. As the mixture cools it will thicken as it does.
You can also just make a quicky paste by putting flour in a bowl and adding water until you have kind of a soupy paste.
If you're planning to make something you want to last for years and years, be aware that flour paste can get moldy, especially in humid environments. You might want to try using powdered wall paper non-pourous adhesive (Note: please read waring on carton) mixed with water. It comes in milk carton type containers and you can find it anywhere wallpaper is sold.
Be sure to cover your work area with lots of newspaper or wax paper - papier mache can get very messy!
To make your shape:
Tear (don't cut) narrow strips of newspaper or newsprint. Narrower strips work best when using a rounded mold... for flat or rectangular surfaces, larger strips are ok. Dip the strips into the paste, coating completely. As you lift the strip out, run it between your thumb and forefinger to squeeze out excess paste. Then drape the strip across your mold. Overlap strips slightly as you go - the torn edges will blend together and your final product will have a smoother finish. You may need more than one layer of paper. It's best to allow each layer to dry before putting another on - this means some projects could take several days!Chichen Itza from cancun what else on the same day? I am planning to rent a car to go to chichen itza from Cancun. What else should I visit on the same day to make the most out of my day. I will be in cancun for a short period of time and want to see as much as I can
Thanks
Consider:
Valladolid
Dzitnup Cenote near Valladolid
Ek Balam Ruins North of Valladolid (Highly recommend this if you want to see ruins, awesome stucco at this site)
Cenote Ik-Kil near Chichen Itza
Balancanche Caves near Chichen Itza
Perhaps a little far but maybe the colonial city of Itzamal, called the city of three cultures.
