Let's Explore the Historic Sites of the Mayan Riviera, Mexico
The Mayan Riviera is located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea stretching from Isla Mujeres, in the north, across the bay from Cancun, to Punta Allen just south of Tulum. Without a doubt one of the most fascinating destinations in the world, with tropical beaches, ancient ruins, with an abundance of marine and wildlife. The Great Mayan Reef is the largest in the Western Hemisphere.
There are just so many adventures to experience, some of which we will now explore:-
Chichen-Itza - Capital of the ancient Mayan imperial. Follow the steps into the past and discover the most important cultural centre of the Mayan civilization. The mysterious city of Chichen-Itza was an important ceremonial centre and you can still see the magnificent pyramid of KuKulkan which is better known as "El Castillo" standing 75 feet high. From here you can journey to Xel-Ha, the perfect spot for snorkelling and relaxation. This natural aquarium is famous for its thousands of brightly coloured tropical fish and the dramatic limestone formations.
Xcaret Theme Park- Natures Sacred Paradise. Xcaret is the unique and friendliest of, the all-in-one eco-archaeological parks of the world. You will find archaeological ruins, dolphin and horse shows, a farm with tropical birds, butterflies, bat caves, beautiful beaches, snorkelling in the famous crystal caves and the well known underground river. Xcaret was one of the most important ports and also a revered ceremonial centre. Immerse yourself in tradition, nature, wonder, adventure and beauty. The grand finale of any visit is the excellent Night Show that takes place in a large covered theatre. The night show is a spectacular production not to be missed. The night begins with an ancient Mayan ball game then next the tales of Mexican history and finally a medley of regional dances.
Mayan Culture - To see the real Mexico you must leave the town and traffic far behind for an expedition into the heart of the jungle where you will experience a Mexico that most tourists, and even many Mexicans, never see.
You can begin your historical journey that spans 1500 years of Mayan culture. The first stop is to the recently-opened ancestral city of Cobá, an archaeological site hidden deep inside the rain forest of south-eastern Yucatan Peninsula. Walk through these verdant green vegetation-covered ruins, one literally feels the ancient rhythms of this once strong region, and climbing the Nohoch Muul Temple (the highest in the region) one can truly appreciate the pristine beauty and immeasurable vastness of the surrounding sub-tropical rain forest.
On to an authentic Mayan village, a self-sufficient community living along side the region's lagoon system. Together with the locals you can walk through their forest, learning of the local fauna (animals) and flora (plants), and view the incredibly beautiful Cenote, (deep water filled sinkholes). Spending time with these Mayan people in the jungle and their villages, one is able to truly appreciate how they live and survive far from the 'civilized' lifestyles that we are accustomed to.
The Great Maya Reef is the largest reef in North America and ranks second in size globally behind the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. Its northern extremity begins off the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula at Isla Mujeres. From there it extends 197 miles south, past Cancun and through the coastal waters of the State of Quintana Roo where it passes alongside the Central American countries of Belize and Honduras.
It is an ecosystem within itself, with diverse and abundant forms of sea life, and yet, it is part of a greater system of rich coral zones that thrive within the Caribbean Sea.
Isla Mujeres - The Island was used by the Mayan people as a sanctuary dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of love and fertility. According to the legend, when the Spanish arrived they found a large number of women statues carved in stone in honour of the goddess, and it is from here that the island gets it's name "Isla Mujeres" meaning Island of Women. Another legend also has it that the island was used as a refuge by the pirate and slave trader, Fermin Mundaca, who built a beautiful hacienda here to try to make a local island girl fall in love with him. The ruins of the construction are a reminder of those times gone by.
Towards the southern tip of the Island Garrafon Reef Park can be found, known worldwide for its natural beauty and recreational activities. If you would like to discovery the treasures of Isla Mujeres why not spend a few days in this enchanting, white sand, quaint Island.
If you would like to know a little about the history and activities of the Island the following website can help you http://www.islamujeres.co.uk
Peter Edward Lee, Swanage, UK - Regular Visitor to the Mayan Riviera and Isla Mujeres
http://www.islamujeres.co.uk - Just across the Bay from the hustle and bustle of Cancun lies the small serene Island of Isla Mujeres, nestling on the Mayan Riviera. Here, white sand beaches border the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, under blue skies, as colourful fishing boats dot the horizon.Isla Mujeres is a very popular destination for those seeking a more relaxed, tranquil, Mexican holiday experience.
Riviera Maya....? My brother and his fiancee are getting married this summer and want to go to the Riviera Maya on their honeymoon. They are going in July and I was wondering if anyone has been there in the summer and had a problem with European women being there topless. I am not bashing anyone, so sorry if this offends you. But this would be very offensive to my bro and his wife. Any help? Thanks.......
I don't know about Cancun area, but I know in Mexico, especially Cabo, public nudity is illegal including sunbathing topless or naked. Some of the tourist towns have established designated beach areas, and I know in Cabo we have our first swingers resort which nudity seems to be a pre-requiste, but I also know the police do not strictly enforce this law, so therefore there is a chance you may see a boob or two. What is the best reasonably priced all inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya? What is the best reasonably priced all inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya? I would really appreciate any suggestions and reasons as to why you think they are the best (amenities or location, etc).
Thanks!
You question is so broad that an answer is difficult. It depends on your age, what activities you like, how long and when you will be there, what you consider "reasonable"and if you expect to stay just at the resort. The Riviera Maya has a huge selection vacation opportunities.
I don't personally like "all inclusive" because it tends to keep you at the resort. I like to get up and get out; eating is a great incentive. There are a lot of different restaurants in Cancún, even an Outback Steakhouse.
The "island" of Cancún (the main resort area) is shaped like a 7 with clubs, restaurants and resorts throughout, most dense at the turn of the 7. Public transportation is frequent and inexpensive. The town of Cancún is at the top end of the 7, it arose as the resort was constructed and remains where most of the resort workers live and do commerce. Many tourists never see it.
The Maya Riviera extends north and south of Cancún. Many resorts extend throughout, some more-or-less isolated, like the Moon Palace. Some like the Playa del Carmen area because it is less hectic than Cancún.
We booked our first trip there through Apple Vacations and I recommend it, a link is below, there are a lot of "deals" there and at all of the vacation sites...orbits, hotels.com, etc. I also recommend that you research the various hotel options through TripAdvisors.com I personally like the Fiesta Americanas
Don't overlook a day-trip to Chichen Itza, a great Mayan site.Where is the best place to have a honeymoon in the Riviera Maya? I am having my wedding in the beginning of May at the RIU Palace Riviera Maya and I am looking for a remote place to honeymoon around this area. We want to stay in a bungalow that is secluded and on the beach. We are looking in Akumal or anywhere nearby. We are laid back and love the jungle and nature, but we still want a bit of luxury. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Here is a very reliable site that rents villas and condos all over the world. Alot of rentals in the Akumel area.

Good luckHow do I get from Cancun to Riviera Maya? I am going to vacation in Rivieara Maya, Mexico. I'm flying into Cancun. How do I get from Cancun to Riviera Maya area?
If you have booked an air/ hotel package usually transportation is included. If not, taxi or bus is another option. Is the water by Montego Bay better/cleaner than the Riviera Maya? I've been to the Riviera Maya, but never to Montego Bay. I'm planning on going but I want to know the comparison of the water.
It is way better!!!! You can see the fish and the bottom without snorkel gear. Ive been to both and cant wait to go back to MobayHow far is Cancun from Riviera Maya (Mexico) ??? My girl friend and i are planning a holiday to Mexico in the summer - We are planning on staying in Riviera Maya yet would like to visit Cancun to experience the night life etc...
How far is it - The travel agent said not far ... Any body know for sure????
The night life in Riviera Maya is good. Go to Playa del Carmen and hit all the hot spots on Fifth Avenue. Cozumel is a ferry ride away.
Cancun is a good 30/40 miles from Riviera Maya.
It's 45 MILES from the Cancun Airport to the Riviera Maya.
You can take a bus (cheapest way) and it will take you depending on traffic at least 45 minutes or more.
Good Luck and have fun)Things to do in the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen area? I'm going to an all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya about 10 mins outside of Playa del Carmen, and I'm looking for "must do things" while I"m there. I would like to see the ruins one day, but am not sure which one to choose. I'd also like to do some shopping, and would like to know where to get good deals! Any info would be appreciated!
Chichen Itza is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. Go if you can. You will need a guide to know what you are looking at. Fifth Avenue in Playa is a fun place to shop, about a mile long. Some shops are "fixed price" others are open for bargaining. If you want the best deal, go early in the morning. If some merchants don't sell to the first customer of the day, they believe their day will go bad. Ask the price, offer half of what they ask, and you are on your way. Probably you'll pay about 3/4 of the original asking price. You will either love or hate Xcaret. It is expensive and includes a thumnail of many things in the area. Have a great time!!What is the best area in Riviera Maya? We'll be heading to Riviera Maya this year and while we're trying to narrow down the resorts, I'm wondering where's the best spot to stay at a resort in that area? While we're there, we'd like to go on a few excursion to see ruins (maybe Chichen Itza?), maybe Xplor adventure park? Definately some zipline. Would be cool to swim with dolphins. So, where should we stay to be near all those and have a great beach?
Stay in Playa del Carmen. The beaches are just in the process of being restored and they are very wide and really nice. PDC is only about 10 minutes away from Xplor and Xcaret (they are directly adjacent to one another). The parks are a little pricey but a lot of fun. And you can do all the adventure stuff you want. Since you know about Xplor, I assume you have looked at their web site, but just in case I attached both.
Chichen Itza is three hours away from PDC. It's worth seeing and the temple of Kukulcan is one of the seven wonders of the world. However, you can no longer climb the pyramid. If you want to do that, take a tour to Copa or Ek Balaam. I prefer Ek Balaam, really interesting. Both of those are 2-3 hours from PDC also. Tulum is another ecological site that is 40 minutes from PDC. It's located right on the ocean. Nice but not as impressive as the others.
You will love it!Looking at going to Riviera Maya for vacation, any recommendations where to stay? My wife and I are wanting to go to get away so looking for a quiet, nice adult type resort. These are the resorts recommended by our travel agent. Have you heard anything about these resorts good or bad?

Mel ia right...this H1N1 flu is far less strong than the WHO thought it would be, the number of cases in the whole world is less than the number of cases of regular flu in one week. it has been blown way out of proportion. It is already fading away in Mexico...and affected only an infinitesimal percentage of the population...mostly from one school in Mexico City. There is no flu in the tourist areas and in the great majority of Mexico , it is life as usual for all of us. There is absolutely no reason for you not to come.
