Cristo Salvatore Cathedral

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior on the banks of the Moskva River, not far from the Kremlin is the tallest Eastern Orthodox Church. Tsar Alexander I wanted it built in 1812 in honor of Christ the Saviour to express gratitude to God and to commemorate the sacrifices of the Russian people. But not the first stone was laid before 1839 and the construction of the cathedral took many years, some of the best Russian painters decorated the interiors for twenty years. He was later consecrated the day when Alexander III was crowned in 1883. In 1931 at the behest of Stalin was destroyed, the marble reliefs were preserved and are exhibited in the Donskoi Monastery. With the end of the Soviet period, it was decided to rebuild the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 1990.
